Assignments

An assignment is one piece of work you've taken on. It belongs to an editor (and through them, a company), has a due date and a status, and knows how it's paid. Find them under Assignments (/assignments).

Fields

Field What it's for
Title What the piece is. Required.
Editor Who assigned it. Required, and must be one of your editors.
Status Where the work stands (see below).
Word count Length. Used for per-word pay and to estimate time.
Interviews How many interviews the piece needs.
Estimated hours / Estimated days Your effort estimate, in hours of work and/or calendar days.
Actual hours Time it really took. Fills in your actual hourly rate and estimate accuracy.
Start date / Due date The work window. Capacity spreads the effort across it.
Billing mode How the piece is paid (see below).
Word rate / Flat amount Shown for Per word / Flat amount billing.
Target hourly rate Overrides your Settings target for this one assignment.
Notes Anything else.

Statuses

Status Meaning
Pending Accepted, not started
In progress You're working on it
Submitted Turned in, awaiting sign-off
Complete Done

Overdue isn't a status you set. An assignment counts as overdue when its due date has passed and it's still Pending or In progress.

How you're paid: billing modes

Billing mode Fee
Inherit company default Word count × the company's Default word rate
Per word Word count × this assignment's own Word rate
Flat amount The Flat amount you entered

Amounts are rounded to the nearest cent.

Finding assignments

The list is ordered by urgency: overdue first, then work due in the next week, then later work, then finished or past work. You can filter by status (including Overdue), company, editor, and a due-date range. Filters are part of the page address, so you can bookmark a filtered view. The list shows 50 at a time. Scroll for more.

The list updates live. Changes from another tab or from the Assistant appear without a reload.

Profitability

Open an assignment to see its Profitability panel: what it's worth, what you've billed for it, and, once you've entered Actual hours, the effective hourly rate compared with your target.

Good to know

  • Deleting an editor also deletes their assignments.
  • To add many assignments at once, use Import CSV.
