Getting started

This walks you from a new account to a working setup: your rates and schedule, the people you write for, and your first assignment. It takes about ten minutes.

1. Create your account

  1. Go to Register (/users/register) and enter your email.
  2. Open the email from wroughtline and click the login link. That confirms your account and logs you in.
  3. Optional: add a password in Settings so you can log in without an email link.

Later you can log in at Log in (/users/log-in) with either an emailed link or your password.

2. Set your rate and schedule

Open Settings (/users/settings). Settings asks you to have logged in recently. If it sends you to the login page, just log in again.

  • Target hourly rate: what you want to earn per hour. Insights and each assignment's profitability compare against it. Click Save target rate.
  • Capacity schedule: Work days per week, Hours per work day, and Billable fraction (0–1), the share of your working time that goes to paid writing (e.g. 0.75). Click Save capacity schedule. This powers Capacity.

3. Add a company

A company is an outlet you write for.

  1. Go to Companies → New company.
  2. Enter the Name and, optionally, a Default word rate (dollars per word, e.g. 0.50). Assignments can use this rate automatically.
  3. Click Save company.

4. Add an editor

An editor is the person who assigns you work. Every editor belongs to one company.

  1. Go to Editors → New editor.
  2. Enter Name, Email, and pick the Company.
  3. Click Save editor.

5. Add your first assignment

  1. Go to Assignments → New assignment.
  2. Fill in Title, pick the Editor, and add Word count and Due date. Everything else is optional: interviews, estimated hours or days, start date, notes.
  3. Choose a Billing mode: Inherit company default (uses the company's word rate), Per word (your own rate for this piece), or Flat amount.
  4. Click Save assignment.

See Assignments for every field.

6. Check your dashboard

Dashboard (/dashboard) shows where your work stands: counts by status, what's Overdue, and what's Upcoming. It updates live as you add and change assignments.
