Importing assignments from a CSV

Bring in a backlog from a spreadsheet instead of typing each assignment. Go to Assignments → Import CSV (/assignments/import).

Steps

  1. Click Download the CSV template on the import page (/assignments/import/template). It has the full header row and one example row.
  2. Fill in one row per assignment and save it as .csv (max 5 MB).
  3. Upload it. wroughtline shows a preview of every row: what will be created, including any new companies or editors, and any errors. Nothing is saved yet.
  4. Click Import N rows to import the valid rows (rows with errors are skipped), or Start over. You'll see the result for each row, then Import another or Done.

Columns

Only company, editor, and title are required. Column names must match the template, and unknown columns are rejected.

Column Format / values
company Company name. Required.
editor Editor name. Required.
editor_email Used when the editor is new
title Required.
status pending, in_progress, submitted, or complete
due_date YYYY-MM-DD
word_count, interview_count, estimated_days Whole numbers
estimated_hours Number
notes Text
billing_mode inherit, word, or flat
word_rate Dollars per word (for word)
flat_amount Dollars (for flat)
target_hourly_rate Dollars per hour

How names are matched

  • Companies and editors are matched by name, ignoring capitalization, among your own records. Editors are matched within the row's company.
  • If a company or editor doesn't exist yet, the import creates it. The preview tells you.
  • If a name matches more than one of your records, that row is rejected as ambiguous. Rename one of them, or fix the CSV.

Good to know

  • Each row is independent: one bad row never undoes the others.
  • The Assistant and connected AI clients can import the same CSV format (the import_assignments tool), including a preview-only mode.
